EM 2016, also known as the UEFA European Championship 2016, was the 15th edition of the football tournament that is held every four years. It was organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and took place in France from 10 June to 10 July 2016.
The tournament featured 24 teams from across Europe, who were divided into six groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group, as well as the four best third-placed teams, advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Portugal emerged as the champions of the tournament, defeating France 1-0 in the final. Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese captain, played a crucial role in the team's victory despite being forced to leave the field due to injury in the 25th minute of the final.
The tournament was widely praised for its organization and the quality of football on display. It also featured some surprising upsets, including Iceland's remarkable run to the quarter-finals on their debut appearance in a major tournament.
